My diversity networks

Profile:

I am an associate in the banking finance team at Stephenson Harwood. I graduated with a languages degree and worked in cyber security, before deciding to change careers and become a lawyer. I obtained my training contract after completing a summer placement scheme at the firm, and then proceeded to study the GDL and LPC at BPP. I qualified with the firm in September 2022.

I am British Asian, born in London but I spent my childhood in Dubai. It was challenging growing up in a bilingual household within in a foreign country, and then being uprooted once again to move back to the UK. This has meant that I have had to be quick to adapt to a new and unfamiliar environment, where I am often in the minority. Whilst this has had its challenges, it has also made me more resilient and open-minded – skills which I have utilised during the application process and my training contract (and would encourage others to do the same).

Having never studied law, I was fortunate enough to be offered assistance from my university, friends and family when applying for training contracts. Despite most of my work experience being non-legal in nature, I fully exploited all of my work and life experience in the applications and interviews, determined to show how it differentiated me from the crowd.
