My Law Firm

Profile:

My journey into law began back home in Uganda, aspiring to study law in the UK. Upon arriving at the University of Leicester at the end of 2021, I was confronted with a reality that many international students face: I needed to secure a job by the time I graduated, otherwise remaining in the UK would not be financially feasible. I was intent on that job being one as a trainee solicitor at a commercial law firm in London.

My intentions were quickly extinguished upon starting in Leicester. I was at a good university, albeit it is not part of the Russell Group. Upon seeing the statistics of the candidates that secure training contracts at the country’s top law firms, I like many Non-Russell Group students was disheartened. Students from universities like mine were firmly in the minority of the select few that secure training contracts. Almost immediately, I felt like I was playing catch up to candidates at Russell Group universities that seemed to have connections across the legal industry and knew the route to a training contract inside out.

Mentorship and diversity initiatives like Aspiring Solicitors levelled the playing field. I sought ad-hoc and ongoing mentorship from legal professionals whose career paths into law affirmed my own. Adopting the mindset and actionable steps that my mentors took to secure their entry into the legal profession informed my journey into law.

Diversity of thought, experience and demographics in the legal profession is key. It enables underrepresented individuals to feel that there is a place for their outlook and perspective in the profession. A student’s intention to enter law should not be extinguished upon the fear of a lack of diversity.
