Profile:
I didn’t always know I wanted to pursue a career in law. After studying politics at university, I graduated with a range of ideas for potential career paths, including law, but I was unsure which direction to take. After a few months working in marketing, I decided to take a gap year and spent seven months travelling while working online as a foreign language English teacher. During this time, I researched legal careers more seriously and, on returning to the UK, explored funding options to study the PGDL.
I enrolled in the LLM at BPP University, which allowed me to access student finance while working part-time as a GCSE and A-Level tutor. Throughout my gap year and LLM studies, I explored different areas of law and researched firms that aligned with my values and interests. Irwin Mitchell stood out as my first choice. I was particularly drawn to its training contract structure, which allows you to specialise in either Law for Individuals or Law for Businesses. The individuals stream strongly appealed to me, as I have always wanted to work directly with people and see the personal impact of my work. Irwin Mitchell’s reputation as a leading firm, combined with its client- focused approach, made it the ideal place to begin my legal career. After successfully completing the application process, I started my training contract in August 2025, two years after graduating from my Politics degree.
Diversity is essential in any organisation, especially in law. Not only are diverse and inclusive teams 87% better at making decisions, but clients need to see that their advisors reflect the society we live in. In individual-focused legal work, having solicitors who share or relate to clients’ cultural experiences is often key to effectively addressing the issues they face.
