Profile:

I am a Trainee Associate at Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP. I studied Law at the University of Warwick, where I also completed a master’s in International Commercial Law, before undertaking the SQE LLM at the University of Law.

I was fortunate to begin university knowing I wanted to pursue a career in commercial law. During my first year, I attended insight days and networking events to help identify which firms aligned with my interests.

However, despite my enthusiasm, I initially underestimated the importance of understanding the application process and what firms truly look for in candidates. As a result, I faced repeated rejections in my second and third years. It was during my masters’ that I took a more strategic approach. Engaging with mentoring initiatives, especially the Aspiring Solicitors Commercial Awareness Competition, transformed my understanding of how to present my experiences more effectively. I refined the structure and tone of my applications while making minimal changes to the substance itself.

Like many others, I empathise with how at times, the process can feel overly competitive and disheartening. However, I genuinely believe that the increased transparency and support available today, particularly through social mobility initiatives, makes success far more achievable with the right preparation and mindset.

Diversity in the legal profession is essential—not just for fairness, but for better outcomes. Law firms serve a wide range of clients, and it’s crucial that their talent reflects the society we live in. Initiatives that promote social mobility have a real and lasting impact, and I’m proud to be part of that progress.
