Profile:

I studied History at the University of Exeter and didn’t consider a career in law until my third year. After some unsuccessful training contract applications, I graduated and started a role as a Legal Assistant at a local authority working across a variety of practice areas including Employment, Childcare Litigation and Corporate. After 2 years and more unsuccessful applications I started the GDL whilst continuing to work part-time. This is when I became increasingly aware of the issues of diversity in the legal profession through my interactions with Aspiring Solicitors. Not only did the experiences I gained through AS and other platforms (Barclays Legal Week, Commercial Awareness Competition, Head Start programme) help me become a better informed candidate for applications, they taught me the importance of diversity in the law. I truly believe in the importance of levelling the playing field for people of diverse backgrounds who are more than capable of achieving their goals, but lack the networks, experience and guidance that others have the opportunity of receiving due to their upbringing.

Before beginning the GDL I had 1 vacation scheme interview in 3 years. Last year I received offers for 5 vacation schemes, and accepted a Training Contract at DLA Piper. I applied to similar firms as before and had the same qualifications. However I had learnt how to present myself on applications, at interviews and during schemes and felt comfortable in doing so, as well as learning how to utilise experiences offered me be through diversity platforms to show firms my potential. For me, the value of mentoring, networking and ‘application education’  was invaluable in helping me to achieve my potential and I believe everyone should be afforded the same.
