Profile:
My original career plan was to be an accountant, before I pivoted to become a tax professional. I spent my “first” career working as a UK tax advisor, a Luxembourgish tax advisor and then as a senior wealth planner in Swiss banking. During this time, I became an Associate of the Taxation Technicians, a Chartered Tax Advisor and a Trust and Estate Practitioner.
Throughout my career, I had noticed that there was a limit to the work you could do as a tax advisor, a point where the tax advisors stepped aside and the solicitors took over. This became even more apparent to me when I worked inhouse: I would spend my days chatting to solicitors over technical matters. I was very lucky that those solicitors I worked with suggested and encouraged me to move into law. On their advice, I did so. I began studying law and was lucky to obtain a training contract with Withers.
I am more than aware of the obstacles and barriers to pursuing a career in the fields in which I have chosen to work, including law. I know that becoming a solicitor can seem daunting and unachievable, especially for people from my background. I’m proof that it is achievable, and I would encourage anyone who wishes to be a solicitor to make their dream a reality.
Diversity is vital in the workforce, and particularly in law. The law must work for everyone. To do this, it needs to be developed with diversity at its core. My own experience in a multi-cultural workforce has shown me that diversity brings unique perspectives and helps build formidable, flexible, adaptive and stronger teams.
