My diversity networks

Profile:

I am a partner in, and head of, the finance team at Travers Smith having attended school in Sheffield and then studied law at Oxford University. Whilst I probably shouldn’t admit this in public, I only really decided to study law because I liked the idea of being a courtroom preacher, John Grisham-style. However, after a couple of years at university, I realised that (1) the English justice system doesn’t really work that way and (2) as much as I love small town America, I probably wouldn’t want to live there long term. Which meant that the dreams of mafia-owned law firms, class actions and tobacco trials that first piqued my interest in the subject gave way to the (admittedly equally glamorous) reality of law fairs, endless application forms and vacation scheme interviews.

After a round of interviews, I was fortunate enough to be offered a vacation scheme at Travers Smith and even more fortunate to be offered a training contract with the firm later that summer. Nearly 20 years later and I’m still here, which is probably testament to the firm’s tolerance as opposed to my talent!

I have recently stood-down as one of the co-heads of graduate recruitment at the firm, but still spend a lot of time interviewing prospective vacation students and trainees. I’d be very happy to discuss interview tips, and the recruitment process generally, so please do get in touch.
