Profile:

I am an associate in BCLP’s Tax Advice & Controversy team, having trained and qualified at the firm.

I am the first generation in our family born in the UK, with my parents moving to the UK in the mid-1980sĀ from Sri Lanka. After studying at Ilford County High School, I was part of the first generation in my family to go to university, studying Law at the University of Warwick.

After graduating, I worked in legal recruitment and as a paralegal. During this time, having not received a training contract during university, I applied for training contracts and was eventually offered a training contract at BCLP in January 2017 after a successful winter vacation scheme. I went on to study the LLM+ (BCLP’s tailored LPC) at the University of Law, before joining the firm as a trainee in March 2019.

As the first generation born in the UK, the first generation to go to University and the first generation to become a lawyer, I did not have easy access to resources and knowledge that could explain to me what a career in law entailed. I had to do a lot of my own research and obtain a variety of work experiences in order to be sure that I wanted to study Law and become a lawyer.

I am an AS Professional Ambassador because I want to provide the kind of access to knowledge and experiences about the profession which I did not have as a young student. I want to help answer your questions about a career in law, what it entails and what obstacles I have faced. I want to ensure that BCLP is open and welcoming to diverse talent from all walks of life, to ensure that you are not restricted by the lack of opportunity.
