My diversity networks

Profile:

I am a solicitor in the Commercial team at Simkins LLP, a media and entertainment law firm. I converted to law after studying a BA in English Literature and then an MA in Shakespeare at UCL.

Whilst I was lucky enough to go to a good school and university, I am the first lawyer in my family and had no connection with any lawyers or legal networks when I began my career. As such, with no real guidance or support, I found the training contract application process completely bewildering and took a rather haphazard approach to the whole business. I was very fortunate to secure a training contract with a firm that valued individualism, and now work in a sector that I am really passionate about, combining my nerdy enthusiasm for contract law with my love for the arts.

I find it hugely frustrating that the legal profession is still not properly reflective of our wonderfully diverse society. This is changing, but not swiftly enough. No one should feel intimidated at the prospect of pursuing a legal career – if you have enthusiasm, commitment and a sharp mind then background, upbringing and ethnicity are irrelevant. Don’t underestimate yourself, and don’t be afraid to ask questions and talk to people in order to get where you want to be.
