Ableism

Discrimination against persons with mental and/or physical disabilities; infrastructure that favour able-bodied individuals.

ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder)

A group of behavioural symptoms that include inattentiveness, hyperactivity and impulsiveness.

Affirmative Action

Proactive policies and procedures for remedying the effect of past discrimination to ensure equal opportunities for all.

Agender

Someone who does not identify with any gender

Al-Amira

The al-amira is a two-piece Islamic veil. It consists of a close fitting cap, usually made from cotton or polyester, and a tube-like scarf.

Ally

A (typically) heterosexual person who supports members of the LGBT community.

Arthritis

Arthritis is a common condition that causes pain and inflammation in a joint. The two most common forms are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis (when the body’s immune system targets affected joints).

Asexual

Someone who does not experience sexual desires.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is the name for a range of similar conditions, including Asperger syndrome, that affect a person’s social interaction, communication, interests and behaviour.

BAME

An acronym used to denote Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic individuals and communities.

Bigender

Denoting or relating to a person whose sense of personal identity encompasses two genders.

Bipolar

Bipolar disorder, formerly known as manic depression, is a condition that affects your moods, which can swing from one extreme to another.

Bisexual

Sexually attracted not exclusively to people on particular gender; attracted to both men and women.

Body Dysmorphic Disorder

Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), or body dysmorphia, is a mental health condition where a person spends a lot of time worrying about flaws in their appearance. These flaws are often unnoticeable to others.

Burka

The burka is a one-piece veil that covers the face and body, often leaving a mesh screen to see through.

Cerebral Palsy

Cerebral palsy is the name for a group of lifelong conditions that affect movement and co-ordination, caused by a problem with the brain that occurs before, during or soon after birth.

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is a long-term illness with a wide range of symptoms. The most common symptom is extreme tiredness.

Classism

Prejudice against people belonging to a particular social class.
