Summer Work Experience Scheme

Leading global pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca is partnering with Aspiring Solicitors for a summer work experience scheme for Aspiring Solicitors members who have graduated, or will have graduated at the time of the scheme, from university.

AstraZeneca is thrilled to continue this scheme following previous successful years.

This exciting opportunity offers participants a unique experience to spend time with and learn from AstraZeneca’s in-house team and lawyers at an international law firm:

  • Gain early exposure to in-house careers.
  • Build your network and improve commercial awareness.
  • Shadow lawyers, sit in on client meetings and observe them giving legal advice.
  • ️There will be workshops, seminars, presentations and social events for participants to attend.
  • Immerse yourself in the exciting and innovative world of this global, science-led, patient-focused pharmaceutical company.

Eligibility

To apply for this opportunity, you must:

  • be an Aspiring Solicitors member;
  • be a law or non-law graduate, or will have graduated by 30 June 2025 when the scheme commences;
  • have an interest in pursuing a career as a commercial lawyer in the pharmaceuticals sector;
  • be eligible to work in the UK;
  • be able to attend in-person in either Cambridge, Macclesfield or London;
  • have NOT already have secured a training contract.

Key Information

  • Dates: Monday 30th June to Friday 4th July 2025
  • Total number of places: 6 (2 places in Cambridge, Macclesfield and London)
  • Participation: In-person work experience in Cambridge, Macclesfield, or London
  • Time commitment: 5 days (Monday-Friday) 9am – 5pm
  • Remuneration: £400 (plus travel expenses if agreed in advance)
  • Candidates must indicate a preference for one location in their application form.

As an aspiring solicitor, the AstraZeneca scheme provided me with invaluable insight into the life sciences sector and the role of an in house lawyer. I enjoyed learning about how the industry is driven by innovation and the fascinating legal issues impacting the biopharmaceutical industry. The scheme provided me with opportunities to talk to stakeholders across AstraZeneca and learn about how their roles furthered the goals of the business. During the scheme, I participated in contract review exercises, a mock cross examination exercise and presented the legal issues within a commercial news story to a panel of lawyers. As a result, I came away from the scheme with a deeper understanding of the life sciences sector and the groundbreaking developments AstraZeneca has been involved in.

Participating in the AstraZeneca scheme was an incredibly empowering experience, particularly as someone from an underrepresented background in law. Previously, I felt intimidated by senior professionals and unsure of my place in the field. However, the opportunity to interact with senior lawyers across AstraZeneca who were friendly, approachable, and eager to answer questions has significantly boosted my confidence. Hearing their diverse career journeys has encouraged me to persevere, knowing there is no single path to success in law.
