How To Make Your Application Stand Out

“How do I make my application form stand out?” This is another question I regularly hear during Ask Chris slots and universities visits.  Firstly, the answer is simple- let your personality come through your application form.  Don’t put what you think the firm wants to hear (although be acutely aware of what is relevant and applicable).  Instead, answer the questions in applications forms having understood the strengths of your personality and your experiences and having considered how/why these might be appealing to the firm.  There is only one of you in the world, therefore, expressing yourself in your application is the best way to help ensure you stand out from the competition.

Secondly, as with most things, going one step further than the competition is sure to assist you to “stand out”.  One of the best ways Aspiring Solicitors can help you to achieve this is by “searching” key words on the Aspiring Solicitors website via the search bar on the top right hand corner of each page by clicking into the box which says “search our site”.

For example, if you were are applying to Dentons or Norton Rose Fulbright, you can not only find out about the firm by typing the firm name in the search bar (or any other law firms name we work with) but you can also see whether that firm has Professional Ambassadors willing to assist you/tell you more about the firm.  This is particularly useful if  firms don’t give employer presentations at your university.  Contacting a Professional Ambassador for a firm you would like to apply to would enable you strengthen your “why us” answer in the application form by stating “Having contacted Aspiring Solicitors Professional Ambassador XYZ, I understand that ABC firm has a very supportive trainee system which…” This is much better than saying something like “I am applying to ABC because of your supportive network for trainees” i.e. without a supporting reference or justification.

The search function of the Aspiring Solicitors website will also enable you to search specific groups and Professional Ambassadors from certain universities and much more.  Why not give it a try and see for yourself!

Best of luck!
