University of Northampton Law Society

Why is D&I important to your Law Society?

Diversity and inclusion is fundamental to our law society because for too long the legal profession been dominated by those who followed the “traditional route” and has been disadvantageous to those who didn’t. The University of Northampton is a very diverse university and we aim to include people from all walks of life in our events to provide a foundation for people to start their future career.

Highlights of ways that your Law Society has tried to increase diversity

We strive for our society to be free for most events and workshops. We provide free mooting workshops to help our members bolster their applications for scholarships and training contracts. This is in order to increase turnout from those from diverse and disadvantaged backgrounds, and to also allow our members to have a competitive advantage against those from Russell Group universities. We have invited guest speakers to the university including alumni from “non-traditional backgrounds” and are now practising barristers.

Treasurer of the Northampton Law Society, 2019-2020

Our society is a vital part of the university experience, and we want to provide a support system of sorts to help our members progress on to the next stage of their life and to bridge the gap between their time at university and their future careers.
