University of Hertfordshire Law Society

Why is D&I important to your Law Society?

Diversity and inclusion is at the heart of what we do at the University of Hertfordshire Law Society. Our Law school continues to be fortunate to have an ethnically diverse student population with more than 75% of students identifying as being from a BAME background. Our goal is to empower our members by providing them with the best possible opportunities and make them feel inspired to enter the legal profession.

Highlights of ways that your Law Society has tried to increase diversity

Working with Aspiring Solicitors and other diversity platforms have been a huge benefit to our society. All our committee members come from different backgrounds and we work together to create the best experience for our members. We organised an event featuring a panel of speakers from Hertfordshire Junior Lawyers Division who shared various perspectives on the implications of diversity both on their careers and within the legal sector. Our members also attended an inspiring talk on Climbing Mountains with Dr Funke Abimbola MBE, a diversity campaigner. International students had the opportunity to experience a different European culture during our international trip to Rome. And finally, our Law Society celebrated Diwali 2019 with style, lighting up sparklers after sampling Indian cuisine that evening.

Every individual deserves access to opportunities that are right for them, regardless of where they come from or what they believe. We do this by highlighting the importance of cultural awareness and social mobility within our Law Society.
