Cardiff University Law Society

Why is D&I important to your Law Society?

With a society comprising of 400+ members, diversity and inclusion means everything as we continue to welcome members from various different backgrounds. We want everyone to feel like they belong. Cultivating equality can only bring us all closer together and empower our Law Society as a whole. We thrive on constructive feedback on how we can foster change to make every member feel important and respected.

Highlights of ways that your Law Society has tried to increase diversity

Firstly, the addition of a Diversity and Wellbeing Officer has been extremely useful as it bridges the gap between the committee and members. Any concerns regarding diversity and wellbeing are considered by an unbiased, confidential listening ear who will also guide them to the appropriate support where necessary. Moreover, our Law Society hosted a three-panel Diversity Event which included speakers from Burges Salmon, Osbourne Clarke, Enterprise Rent-A-Car, Show Racism the Red Card and many more. The connections that we have made through organising the event are priceless as every law firm and organisation have expressed eagerness to continue to work alongside us to achieve a more diverse and inclusive Law Society. Lastly, our Law Society promotes and attend diversity events held by our sponsor law firms who we keep in close contact with to continue our path for a more inclusive future together.

Thomas Eastment

Careers Officer for Cardiff University Law Society, 2019-2020

Our student-run Law Society takes prides in the promotion of diversity, as evident in our inclusive and democratically elected committee which serves as a forum whereby the views of our student body can be expressed, coupled with an unwavering commitment to providing equal opportunities for all. Our Law Society has had a record-breaking year, attracting more members and sponsors than ever before, thus retaining its title as the largest society on campus. To match this increased demand, we set a target of increasing diversity to ensure our core values reflect a progressive attitude.
