Congratulations to Jevan Light for being named as our Member of the Month for November 2019!
Despite attending a non-selective comprehensive school in Cornwall, where only 20% of leavers go on to university, Jevan achieved 11 A* – A GCSEs. Jevan went to study at a non-selective college, where he achieved A*A*A*AAA in his A Levels and AS Levels. Now as an undergraduate at the University of Durham, Jevan has already achieved a First in his first year, placing Jevan third in his year group of over 290 students.
In addition to his fantastic academics, Jevan has demonstrated that he is committed to a career in law through his work experience. In his first year, Jevan attended seven law events to increase his awareness of legal careers and worked as Norton Rose Fulbright’s Durham Campus Ambassador.
Jevan also secured legal internships with Goldman Sachs, Hogan Lovells and EY. In addition to this, he has the responsibility of writing three articles in a weekly newsletter on the legal implications of innovative financial matters, including analysing Fintech and the ‘passporting’ of financial services post-Brexit, which has encouraged him to think about legal innovations critically.
Helping others is also important to Jevan. He is part of the ‘Enhancing Legal Sector Access’ Society at university, which involves creating a weekly commercial awareness newsletter to help students from non-traditional backgrounds excel in their applications. Jevan has also demonstrated his commitment to Diversity & Inclusion by attending the LGBT+ Legal Insight Scheme at Goldman Sachs and the ACCEPT+ event at Clifford Chance for LGBT+ students. Jevan also uses his free to time to tutor A Level students in the North East on a voluntary basis, to help them secure the grades they need for university. He recently helped one student secure the grades she needed to study at the University of Bristol.
