Profile:

I grew up in Portsmouth attending Priory Secondary School and South Downs College. I then went on to study at the University of Plymouth, where I graduated with a degree in Criminology and Criminal Justice Studies with Law BSc (Hons) in 2015 and the Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL) in 2016.

I am the first person in my family to study law and at the time had no connections to the legal sector. My lack of contacts was at first a huge hindrance – it is so difficult to get your initial “foot in the door” at a law firm without looking overly keen. I was also being trumped by those applicants who selffunded their LPC straight after attending “better universities”, something I was not in a position to do.

After numerous training contract rejections (or lack of responses) I changed my approach and starting applying for Paralegal positions. I was lucky enough to be hired as a Litigation Paralegal at Blake Morgan LLP where I have been employed since 2016. After successfully earning a Training Contract I then completed the Legal Practice Course at the University of Law in 2020 whilst working part time in the same role. I then commenced my training contract with Blake Morgan LLP in March 2021 and qualified as a Solicitor in September 2023.

I believe it is of the upmost importance that aspiring solicitors who are state school educated and study at Non-Russell Group universities are given equal opportunities to those who are privileged enough to have received private education. I am fortunate to have been given these opportunities that has enabled me to be socially mobile and I want to be able to do the same.
