Law School Attended
Trainee solicitor | Hogan Lovells
- Educated outside the UK
- Non-Russell Group university
- Low income background
When I first moved to the UK, the language barrier and my limited knowledge of the legal industry were a major challenge for me.
While studying towards my LLB Law degree at SOAS University of London, I worked 30+ hours a week to financially support myself and undertook various extra-curricular activities at the university. After attending a number of open days at law firms I realised that to succeed in the ever-competitive legal industry, I had to proactively build my own network and gain transferable skills. Fortunately, I learned about Aspiring Solicitors that provided me with invaluable opportunities to gain invaluable skills.
I cannot stress enough how important each AS event could be for your career. Through attending the AS Open Days I had the opportunity to interact and connect with renowned legal experts and get to learn more about the legal industry. I participated in the AS Commercial Awareness Competition 2016/2017 and emerged as one of the finalists. This intensified my interest in business and geopolitical events, boosting my confidence as well as my commercial acumen. Subsequently, I was selected for the Bank of America & Hogan Lovells Scheme whereby I further increased my understanding of finance and corporate law. I was fortunate enough to meet mentors who provided me with bespoke and honest advice.
This has helped me earn the right skill set and crucial experience required to navigate the legal career. I now can confidently attend assessment centres and perform exemplary during interviews.
The legal industry is certainly one of the most competitive and the recruitment process can be very challenging at times but, you need to have a plan and stick with it! Be proactive and resilient, take rejections as an opportunity to learn and always, stay focused. Perseverance and hard work will pay back.
