Profile:

Growing up, I had always wanted to be a journalist, so when I finished school that is what I enrolled in at university. After finishing my first degree I worked for an international mining company in corporate and government communications. I had always had an interest in law so I applied for and commenced a post-graduate Juris Doctor law degree when I was 22 years old.

While I always had the support of my family, I do not come from a privileged background and I was educated at a state school, with students from many different walks of life. I have never seen this as a particular disadvantage, and indeed consider it has probably made me a more compassionate and understanding person, and certainly helped with the varied pro bono work I have undertaken during my career. However, I have experienced the feeling of being on the ‘outer’ when your schooling or lifestyle does not match that of your peers. As a foreign qualified lawyer, I have also felt at times on the outer as I was not educated in the United Kingdom.

I am fortunate to work in the Dispute Resolution team at Travers Smith, which is both a diverse and inclusive team. Travers demonstrates a real commitment to the diversity of its work force, which makes it a genuinely welcoming and inclusive place to work. Of course, we can always do more to ensure that the profession is open to everyone, regardless of background. There is no ‘one’ type of person who makes a good lawyer, and indeed our strength as a team and as a firm actually lies in our differences as people.
