My diversity networks

Profile:

I secured a training contract at Goodwin Procter through a direct training contract application in 2021. I am currently in my final seat at the firm – Complex Business Litigation and Dispute Resolution.

I studied a 4-year law degree at Northumbria University graduating with a Masters in Law. As the first in my family to attend university, I had no idea what the life of a city lawyer would be like or had any connections outside my home town to help get my foot in the door.

In my first few years of making applications, I struggled with demonstrating my desire to become a commercial solicitor and failed to understand the differentiating factors between law firms, resulting in no luck with vacation schemes or training contracts. I knew that if I wanted to break into international commercial law, I would have to gain this experience elsewhere, and found that paralegalling at a variety of firms, in different practice areas, helped me to gain a wider understanding of the legal industry and focus my applications towards law firms that specialised in areas that I was genuinely interested in.

Through these roles, I built an extensive support network who have all been instrumental in building my confidence to apply to firms that wouldn’t typically hire non-Russell Group candidates either through reviewing my applications or conducting mock interviews.

Prior to moving to London, I had only ever lived in the North and was hesitant to make the move, knowing no-one and warned by friends and relatives of the perils and expenses of the Capital. Needless to say, I am thoroughly enjoying my time here and would be happy to dispel any myths about living in London or working in US law firms, so please feel free to reach out.
