Associate | Shoosmiths
- First generation lawyer and to attend University
- State school educated
- Non-Russell Group university
I am an associate in the corporate team at Shoosmiths and joined the firm in 2014. I advise corporate clients and individuals on buying and selling companies and businesses. I also advise on investments into companies which are in their early stages of growth. No two days are ever the same and I really enjoy the work that I do.
I was the first person in my immediate and wider family to attend university and also the first trained lawyer. I did my law degree at the University of Reading, which is non-Russell Group and went to a state school in Surrey where I grew up. I was fortunate to have extremely supportive parents who encouraged me to go to university and embark on a career as a lawyer.
I struggled to obtain a training contract at the beginning (I had to complete the LPC without one) and found the application process daunting, especially with initially having no contacts in the legal world. I tried to get as much experience as possible and hard-work and perseverance eventually paid off. After working at a legal costs firm for a couple of years, I was offered a training contract with them and went on to do a seconded corporate seat at a regional firm in the South East where my passion for corporate law developed. I qualified at a regional firm and moved to my current firm shortly after. Your background should not hold you back from pursuing a career in law. I’m happy to answer any questions you might have about embarking on a legal career.
