Trainee Solicitor | Shoosmiths
- State school educated
- First generation lawyer and to attend University
I graduated from The University of Manchester with a first-class Law LLB degree in 2016 and completed my LPC in 2017. My parents did not attend university and I am the first in my family to pursue a legal career.
Prior to my training contract, I did not have any experience working as a paralegal. Along with informal work experience and vacation schemes, I improved my interpersonal skills by working as a wedding coordinator at the weekend. This helped me to build my confidence as I was given a lot of responsibility from a young age. I would often discuss my experience working in the hospitality sector in my applications and I believe this helped me to stand out from other applicants.
I was initially unsuccessful in my first set of applications as I didn’t spend enough time thinking about the type of law firm I wanted to join. I therefore invested more time in developing my commercial awareness and narrowed my focus to applying to national law firms only.
I completed a vacation scheme with Shoosmiths in 2016 and was offered a training contract to start in 2017. I am currently sat in my third seat in the Corporate department in the Manchester office which I am enjoying. My previous seats were Real Estate and Property Litigation and I was fortunate to work in one of the best Property teams in the country.
Please do not hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions about life as a trainee solicitor or would like some advice about the application process. My biggest piece of advice now would be to approach each assessment with confidence and to avoid comparing yourself to other candidates.
