Law School Attended
Trainee Solicitor | Mayer Brown
- State school educated
- First generation lawyer
- Attended non-Russell Group university
I graduated from Lancaster University with an upper second class degree in philosophy, politics and economics in 2015. After taking a year out for travel and voluntary work, I studied the graduate law diploma at Swansea University, and graduated in summer 2017 with a commendation.
I have worked a variety of part time roles, all contributing to my desire to learn the law and to my commercial awareness. Highlights included organising emergency transport for horses stranded on motorways and crashing a pallet of 500 cans of coke into the display of prosecco at Lidl.
As a winner of the 2017 Aspiring Solicitors Commercial Awareness competition, I have enjoyed my work experience at all the sponsor firms, and following the summer vacation scheme at Mayer Brown was offered a training contract.
As a non-Law graduate and first-generation lawyer, I felt very behind my peers in terms of networking and legal experience. However, I feel the industry is moving away from this, and want to encourage people from all backgrounds to aspire to a career in law.
So don’t be afraid to reach out for help, there’s no such thing as a stupid question!
