Profile:

I studied law at the University of East Anglia and graduated in 2014. After pursuing various marketing roles, I worked in a legal recruitment firm for just under two years. This experience was invaluable for me, as it opened my eyes to the different kinds of law firms in the UK and the variety of practice areas and sectors they operate in. Knowing what made a law firm unique and stand out from their competitors was extremely helpful for me when deciding whether to apply there or not.

Working in legal recruitment also gave me the opportunity to greatly improve my commercial awareness skills, and shortly before leaving the company, I was able to secure a training contract with Burges Salmon in Bristol.

Having worked in legal recruitment for so long, and having gone through the legal application process myself, I truly understand the difficulty in securing legal work experience, vacation schemes and training contracts. The legal profession is incredibly competitive, particularly for someone like me who is a black female, state-educated and who attended a non-Russell group university. However, I believe if I can make it, anyone can! I would be very happy to offer any advice or tips to anybody who would like to pursue a career in law. More specifically, I am also happy to talk to anyone thinking about applying to law firms based outside of London, and discuss my own reasons for doing so.
