I am a newly-qualified corporate lawyer in the Guildford office of this firm, having also completed a two-year training contract with this firm.
My journey into law (and into this pathway) was via state school in Malaysia and a spur-of-the-moment decision to experience university life in the UK, but having grown attached to this country and committed to a career in law, I decided to seek a training contract with a law firm in the UK and, after numerous attempts throughout my second and third years in university, was successful in obtaining a training contract with this firm.
Given the dissimilarities in working culture, language and even colour it can be intimidating for internationals/ethnic minorities to even apply for employment (let alone work) here. Having completed my two years of training here, I have found that firms (especially Charles Russell Speechlys) actively encourage diversity and this to me is very evident in my day-to-day working environment. I am a firm believer that diversity adds enormous value to the services a law firm offers, as each of us brings different viewpoints to the table and would therefore welcome the chance to have a conversation with or provide guidance to anyone who is considering or applying for a career in law.
