Profile:

I am a junior associate with the London office of Shearman & Sterling, having qualified into the firm’s Litigation practice. Graduating university with a degree in law in 2015, I went on to secure a vacation scheme and training contract with Shearman & Sterling in the summer of 2016, and joined the firm in September of the following year. During my two-year training contract, I rotated through Finance, Litigation, Project Development & Finance (on secondment to the firm’s Singapore office) and Antitrust.

Coming from a low-income background, I received a state education at Primary, Secondary and Sixth Form levels. Achieving good grades, I was able to secure a place at the University of Warwick to read law, as the first generation of my family to attend university.

I was met with a lot of early disappointment in my training contract and vacation scheme applications – an experience which nearly pushed me to abandon the legal career path altogether. Thankfully though I persevered, and a year after graduating university I found myself in the offices of Shearman & Sterling completing my first vacation scheme. It was from here that I secured my training contract, and became the first member of my family to enter the legal profession.

My route to securing a training contract was therefore a relatively long one and, as a result, I know all too well how tough and unforgiving the process can be. I found that the support and feedback offered by my university and other career services to be an essential tool in learning to present the best version of myself, and I therefore believe such services are essential in guiding people through the recruitment process. As a result, I am eager to offer whatever help I can to the current generation of applicants who are looking to take their first steps onto the legal career ladder.
