Future trainee solicitor | Charles Russell Speechlys LLP
- State school educated
- Low income family
- First generation lawyer
I am a future trainee at Charles Russell Speechlys in Guildford, with my training contract starting in 2022. I graduated from the University of Bristol in July 2020, and am currently studying an LLM at the University of Cambridge.
I am state school educated, and I studied law at AS before choosing to complete a law degree. I chose to study law as I already knew that I was keen to explore different legal career options. After starting University, focus on careers development from an early stage was quite overwhelming. Coming from a low-income family and as a first generation lawyer, I had limited legal experience to use for applications and interviews, and was unaware how to effectively use my non-legal experiences to showcase my skills.
Knowing how daunting the process was, I want to help empower people from a diverse range of backgrounds. My best piece of advice would be to not let anything hold you back, and use every opportunity you can to get help, support and feedback. I found careers advisors extremely beneficial to enable me to develop my skills and confidence – it’s definitely worth practising as much (and as early) as you can!
Diversity is important to me because it shapes our living and working environments. Having a diverse workforce is key for people to learn from each other, as different perspectives and ways of thinking can help challenge others. Diversity is therefore a great way to achieve innovative solutions.
Having recently completed applications and attended interviews for Training Contracts and LLM programmes, I’d be happy to answer any questions you have about these or about any of my experiences. Please do get in touch, and good luck!
