Profile:

I graduated from the University of York’s LLB in 2019 and the LPC at BPP Holborn in February 2020. Ahead of beginning my training contract in September 2020 I am working at a legal technology start-up named StructureFlow.

I came to university at 25, after working in hospitality for 7 years. I was immediately concerned about whether being a mature student, being gay, being a first-generation university student, being working class, being dyspraxic – or even, ridiculously, being Scottish, would affect my chances at a training contract. These factors eventually helped me into my training contract. Not because I “ticked boxes,” but because they help me relate to, and understand, a huge variety of people – and this is a people business.

I was rejected from almost every scheme I applied to in first year. After being so roundly rejected, I spent a lot (!) of time on my application strategy. Subsequently I attended vacation schemes at Allen & Overy, Slaughter and May, and Linklaters. I’m very happy to share that strategy.

I had an extremely full extracurricular life, but more important than that – in my opinion – was asking good questions of as many lawyers as I could, by networking as much as I could. I also benefitted hugely from several mentors, training workshops, and events run by Aspiring Solicitors, DiversCity in Law, and the LGBT Leaders Conference.

I finished university by running the York Law Society and establishing an application program for a wide variety of students. I am therefore happy to deal with questions on a wide variety of matters, including from non-law students.
